The first flag flown over the site was flown in honor of 351 air medical crewmembers who lost their lives while serving their communities. This flag was dubbed "Erin's flag" in honor of Erin Leah Eachus Reed who lost her life on September 29, 2005. Also lost in this accident were Stephen Moore Smith and Lois Reiko Suzuki. This flag was given to Erin's mother, Sandy Brians, who was one of the earliest supporters of the memorial and provided invaluable information to the memorial regarding air medical losses.
